SUPPORTING GUIDE

Verified Election Results and Public Updates

Explain what is unofficial, what remains to be processed, and when counts become certified—without inventing numbers or promoting rumors

01 · Interpreting results

Three different information states

An election-night result is a preliminary report. An unprocessed-ballot estimate describes remaining work. Certified results follow the official canvass and state process.

Unofficial results

Results released after polls close may change as additional ballots are processed

Unprocessed ballots

County estimates can change as ballots arrive, are validated and processed; they are not votes awarded to any side

Certified results

County certification precedes the Secretary of State’s December 11 statewide Statement of Vote certification

02 · A publishable update standard

Verify before sharing

Use a short, consistent record for every published election update. This is a proposed editorial standard, not an automated feed.

03 · Reusable public explanation
